About
As a child, I spent a good sum of time playing percussion instruments, walking picket lines, and exploring the natural world around me. These three elements of myself – the musician, the muckraker, and the naturalist – still ring true today and inform much of the work I do as a sculptor. Drawing from personal experience and independent research, I use metaphorical imagery (and often times a tinge of dark humor) to question the notion of “progress” and elicit conversation and critique of the world in which we live.
Approaching my art with a “waste not, want not” mentality, I work primarily with salvaged materials: be it metal pilfered from the dump, wood and stone remnants collected from construction sites, or animal remains pulled off the road and processed myself. In doing such, I imbue my work with an undertow that pushes against a capitalist driven consumer culture. Sometimes this detritus influences the direction of a piece, but is never the focal point in itself.
